CLIMBING IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA?

Rock Climbing has a long tradition in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) but as a result of the precarious conditions caused by the Yugoslavian wars, it came to a pause and started again slowly from 2000. In contrast to most parts of Europe, climbing in Bosnia and Herzegovina is still mostly a subcultural activity which is relatively unknown locally and underrepresented on a European dimension, thus slowing the development of the sport.
Today BiH has a rapidly growing climbing scene and many extremely dedicated Climbing Clubs like the ‘Climbing Club Extreme Banja Luka’.
Despite limiting conditions, they have been building and educating climbing
communities and started to develop some of the jewels of the almost endless rock potential of this small country.

DRILL & CHILL FESTIVAL?

The ‘Drill & Chill Climbing and Highlining Festival’ is based on the idea
of connecting people, sharing skills, knowledge, ressources and a good time among the climbers of Central Europe, the region and Bosnia and Herzegovina. By cooperatively creating new climbing routes, highlines, media attention and sharing an outdoor culture, the festival strives to strengthen the development of climbing as a sport and as a way of living an active, healthy and sustainable outdoor lifestyle.

CALL FOR ROUTESETTERS & VOLUNTEERS

In order to ensure safety and a good atmosphere among all participants, the bolters are asked to share the rock in a cooperative and responsible fashion and to respect the local bolting ethics. Detailed sector fotos will be provided as well as daily bolters meetings.
Due to the alpine environment, multipitch climbing experience is a requirement for all bolters!
If you are new to bolting but a solid sport climber and eager to learn a new skill and put in a good effort, get in touch! There are a few sectors for single-pitch sport climbing routes where a guided bolting workshop will be organized for newbie bolters.
If you would just like to join us for the fun of it and share your love for the outdoors and get involved, your help will be needed and much appreciated. We can also point out some local climbing areas for you.

THE CANYON

Tijesno Canyon hosts an abundance of uncharted and mostly unnamed limestone of all colors, styles and angles – be it hard & steep endurance hammers on tufas and crimps, slabby old-skool sneaking, classic ridge scrambling, logical trad-lines or plaisir jug-pulling. The walls are in general between 70 and 200m, the main orientation is south.

1st DRILL & CHILL FESTIVAL – 2015

The making of a world class climbing area…

The first Drill & Chill festival 2015 was a pioneer project and a huge success: We hosted 70 international visitors from 13 countries and 70 local climbers .
Over ten days we bolted 65 new pitches between 5a and 9a in 5 sectors – a total of 21 multipitch routes between 70 and 200m. 5 Highlines were rigged between 30 and 100m in length, up to 250m vertical drop. 4km of marked approach paths were created and mapped.
Apart from the fruits of our work it was a great party and we are happy to say we now have many new friends spreading all over the world. We learned a lot from each other! Thanks to all the bolters, volunteers and participants!
